The Birdhouse
"Trans-run arts space on 4th and Manitoba, with the only parking lot in Vancouver that's actually a place to be."
The Birdhouse opened in Mount Pleasant in 2024, replanted from Strathcona's Warehouse before the St. Paul's redevelopment swallowed the block. Programming: drag, drag brunch, karaoke, dance parties, DJs, live music. Trans-run, everyone welcome, three-year lease and counting.
One open floor. Bar on one side, stage on the other, security at the side door. Off to the side, a chill room with couches and video games for when the dance floor gets to be too much. The part you'll talk about later is the parking lot. In summer it's the patio: asphalt, picnic tables, string lights, a crowd that pulls from Davie and East Van and somewhere in between.
Bring the friend who has been meaning to "try going out more." The Birdhouse is one of the easiest queer rooms in the city to walk into for the first time, and one of the safest to keep coming back to.
"Queer-friendly, often, simply isn't enough."
